Prague Nights, Paperback/Benjamin Black

A mystery set in sixteenth century Prague is presented by the Chandler-esque alter ego of John Banville, Benjamin Black. The emperor's mistress is found dead by young doctor Christian Stern, with Stern employed by the emperor to find the culprit. Stern enters a world of coded messages, love affairs and rivalries as he descends through the imperial court.
