Howarth was the sole survivor of a group of expatriate Norwegians who sailed to Nazi-occupied Norway in 1943; they were betrayed to the Nazis, but he managed to escape. Frostbitten and snow-blind, he found an arctic village, and the inhabitants looked after him.
